Matariki

Kia Ora,

This week we have been learning about Matariki. Yesterday we had to write about what we know about Matariki and what we are doing. Here it is!

Matariki

What Matariki means. Matariki is a group of 9 stars, the stars’ names are Waiti, Waita, Waipunarangi, Tapuanuku, Tupuarangi, Ururangi, Pohutukawa, Hiwa-i-te-rangi and Matariki. Matariki is also the name for the Maori New year. This is New Zealand’s second year of actually celebrating or actually having a public holiday on Matariki. Apparently it is bad luck if you don’t see the stars on Matariki and it is good luck if you see the stars on Matariki.

On Matariki I look for the stars at night and eat some yummy kai like meat, roast potatoes, peas, corn and carrots. This Matariki I’m going to my Dad’s house and hopefully I have a blast.

Nga Mihi,

Ryder
